Yamaha Mu100r

Well all messing about with the Roland PMA-5, stirred up my interest in the whole GS/XG synth era. When computers had'nt reached the point where they could even play back midi files properly let alone with any quality.
To get any musical results, hardware was necessary, and to fill this demand, Roland and Yamaha entered into an arms race with two fairly compatible tightly defined specs for midi playback- XG and GS.
Apart from the PMA-5 Ive never had access to an advanced GS or XG machine. While I on a computer I have dabbled with various peices of software with good results, felt the urge to check out a XG box.
Enter the Yamaha MU100r, a monster XG module with capacity for two of Yamahas PLG synth daughter boards.
Currently I have VL and AN boards installed. The VH harmoniser board I swapped out for the AN.

Editors for the Roland PMA-5

There were quite a few applications created for the Sound Canvas range of products over the years. Many of these are getting hard to find, but so far I've found a couple that are useful.

GS ADVANCED EDITOR 4.0.

I believe this was Rolands offical editor for the SC55 and SC88 series. Its quite hard to find online, fom memory I found an old dead lnk and retrived it using www.archive.org. Had a look last night, but still can't find where I found it.
Anyway GSAE is the most complete editor for the PMA-5 I have found. Other than it not having all of the correct patch name listed, because its was intended for the SC55, it gives access to the entire sound engine.
Its biggest limitation is that the interface uses numerical settings for everything. Its a very precise way of working, but it feels like using Excel.

Getting the PMA5 Conversion Software to run on Windows XP

I've had sucess in getting Rolands PMA-5 Conversion software to run on Windows XP. This is very useful, as this software is the only way to cleanly transfer files in and out of the PMA-5. Ive seen a couple of reports that recording track by track into a DAW creates a fair bit of unwanted data.

The software consisted of two floppy disks. These are availible from a couple of the Yahoo PMA-5 groups. One disk has the conversion software, while the other has a windows 95 serial driver and aditional style patterns for trafwering to the PMA-5.

The conversion software must be loaded from the "A" drive. Which is fine on a machine with a floppy drive, but will require creating a virtual "A" drive on most current floppyless windows machines.

Running the installer and program under the windows 95 compatibility layer is also neccesary to get it running under XP. This is accessed in the properties box of the .exe files.
